Jim Chapman Community Resident was a Pallbearer at JFK Funeral

Jim Chapman Communities

We never really know what to expect from certain moments in life until they are upon us. Such was the case for Hugh Clark, a current resident of Jim Chapman CommunitiesBrookhaven at Johns Creek community. His story is a prime example of how even the surest of decisions can yield unexpected results.

It all started for Clark when he was 17, an age where most of us have no idea what to do for summer vacation, let alone a career. But Clark was different. By that age he had graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and enlisted in the Navy.

Originally set on pursuing a career in technology in the military, Clark was later offered a different path in Washington D.C. He worked hard and was invited to join the Presidential Honor Guard. After a few months, Clark was asked to become a pallbearer in the ceremonial unit .

While much of his time in the unit was standard procedure, there was one event that stood out above all others: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

“We were up in the barracks and I was pressing my dress blues thinking I would be going home for Thanksgiving. When it came on the TV that President Kennedy was shot, we were all in shock. Everyone was restricted to the base,” said Clark.

The next series of events are remembered vividly. Clark and five other soldiers were responsible for going to Andrews Air Force Base and loading the casket into an ambulance so that the body could be given an official autopsy. He recalls seeing Kennedy’s wife, Jackie, with blood still on her pink dress and at the hospital, seeing the president motionless on the table.

The following day, Clark was responsible for traveling with the casket until it arrived in Arlington Cemetery. After the funeral, he gave the president a final salute — a memory Clark said he’ll never forget.

After leaving the military, Clark became an investigator for the United Nations and later joined the New York City Police Department. Upon retiring, he went back to school to become a certified drug and alcohol counselor and worked as the vice president of residential services for a rehabilitation center in Stamford, Conn.

Clark officially retired in 2008. He and his wife now reside at Jim Chapman Communities’ Brookhaven at Johns Creek community. Clark enjoys the community and since retiring, he can usually be found on the golf course. According to him, the community is like family, and he feels more comfortable than he did in his previous residence. Living at Johns Creek also means being near his daughter, who lives only seven miles away.
