While looking to relocate from Douglasville to an active adult community, Dick and Madeline Treaster made sure to visit every active adult community they could throughout the metro Atlanta area. After living in Douglas County for 30 years, they wanted to make sure that their move satisfied a broad range of criterion. While many homes they viewed would have been adequate, Dick said he was looking for a community that offered a little more. More specifically, somewhere he could play in the dirt.
Having grown up an avid gardener, Dick had the reputation amongst his friends and family as a “Mr. Green Thumb” of sorts. So, it came as no surprise when visiting Brookhaven at Johns Creek, that he was blown away by the community’s dedicated Garden Center.
“I have always had a garden,” said Treaster. “I grew up helping in my grandfather’s garden and later my father’s. While we loved all of the amenities Brookhaven at Johns Creek had to offer, the garden attracted me the most.”
Having been the first resident to move into the community in September of 2008, Treaster began grooming and preparing its gardens as soon as weather permitted. In February of this year, Treaster started the process of planting and seeding in the half-acre amenity.
To date he has planted sweet corn, green beans, yellow beans, onions, red beets, zucchini, five different types of cucumbers and eight different varieties of tomatoes. He has also created a bed for growing gourds for the community’s birdhouse. Recently, he began harvesting many of the crops.
He has created a bed solely dedicated to growing herbs including mint, cilantro, basil, dill, and oregano. His flower garden has also recently expanded. In addition to a variety of ivy and vine flowers, Treaster has also seen one of his more than four varieties of sunflowers grow to 12-feet.
Treaster currently spends between a half hour to three hours per day working in the garden. Although he is the only one currently maintaining the garden, he says he can’t wait for his fellow residents to join him.
“I would love to share it with my neighbors,” he said. “Right now I am able to share it with my wife, my children and my four grandsons who all enjoy getting involved.” But playing in the garden isn’t the only thing that Treaster has come to love about his new community.
“The community of Johns Creek has everything you could possibly want from restaurants to shopping,” he said. “It is so convenient to everything. My wife and I love it here.”
